Bloomingdale’s

The Project

Bloomingdale’s first Hawaii location brought a distinctive retail experience to Ala Moana Center in Honolulu. Spanning three levels and 165,000 square feet, the store features an array of designer spaces and architectural details, including several elements inspired by Hawaiian culture and the surrounding environment.

KMDI helped bring that vision to life with custom architectural features throughout the store. The centerpiece is a large ceiling trellis inspired by a traditional Hawaiian canoe, complemented by hundreds of faux wood beams that echo the ribbing of a canoe’s hull. Together, these elements incorporate local design influences into a modern retail environment, balancing cultural inspiration with the scale and finish expected of a high-end department store.

KMDI Solutions

The 20-by-80-foot hanging trellis features a truss-like design with beams finished in realistic architectural woodgrain film. Faux gusset plates at the soffit connections were finished to replicate metal, creating the look of traditional structural detailing without the added weight.

Faux wood beams carry the canoe-inspired design throughout the store. KMDI also fabricated the shoe department’s interlocking circular ceiling rings, display tables and boxes, and high-gloss displays for Chanel, Giorgio Armani, and MAC.
