Choctaw Cultural Center
Choctaw Cultural Center welcomes guests with a striking suspended entry rotunda rooted in cultural meaning and community input. The design draws inspiration from the traditional Choctaw home, the Chukka, a circular structure symbolizing strength, connection, and family.
Spanning 34 feet in diameter, the rotunda reinterprets this form at a monumental scale. Finished in knotty pine veneer, a material native to the region, the feature blends cultural authenticity with a modern architectural presence, creating a powerful first impression at the center’s main entry.
MicroLite!™ Solutions
KMDI fabricated the large-scale suspended rotunda using MicroLite!™, enabling the structure to achieve its full 34-foot diameter without the weight constraints of traditional materials. The lightweight system allowed for efficient installation while maintaining the integrity of the circular form.
As the design evolved, a traditional straw thatched roof element was introduced. MicroLite’s strength and versatility made it possible to support the added load without compromising performance or structure. The result is a seamless integration of cultural storytelling and engineered fabrication, delivering a feature that is both visually impactful and structurally sound.
