Mystic Lake Casio
Mystic Lake Casino Hotel in Prior Lake, Minnesota, is a major resort and gaming destination owned by the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community. At the heart of one of its casino spaces, KMDI helped bring an ambitious architectural feature to life: the Lava River, a suspended, illuminated installation that doubles as a wayfinding element leading guests toward the high-limit gaming area.
Inspired by the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community’s relationship with the Minnesota River Valley, the flowing design reimagines traditional wayfinding as an immersive architectural experience.
KMDI Solutions
KMDI fabricated thousands of lightweight custom pieces to create the Lava River’s flowing form. Finished in metallic brass, the individual elements range from 2.5 to 24 feet long and were arranged in a precise pattern to create the appearance of moving lava. Individually addressable LED lighting adds depth and movement through backlighting.
To help ensure an accurate, efficient installation, KMDI also provided detailed, step-by-step installation instructions for this large-scale suspended feature. The result combines innovative materials, intricate fabrication, and integrated lighting in an architectural element that serves both an artistic and practical purpose.
